their symptoms mean, they can call NHS Direct. It is open 24 hours a day 365
days a year.
NHS 111
The NHS 111 service can be used when someone needs help fast but the
situation is not life threatening, or when they do not know whom to call.
Telephone lines are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
They can give health advice, or inform a person on how to find a health
service, for example an emergency dentist or 24 hour pharmacy. The service is provided
free of charge. At present the service works only in the northeast of England,
but will be extended throughout the UK, including London by 2013. It will
eventually replace the NHS Direct telephone number.
NHS Walk-in Centres
These centres have nurses who treat less serious problems, such as infections,
small cuts or wounds, and fractures. No appointment is needed. In general, they
are open Monday to Friday from 07:00-22:00, and at weekends from 09:00-22:00.

It is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year
Pharmacies/Chemists
Pharmacists are experts on medicines. They can also offer advice on less
serious health problems and help a person decide if there is need to see a doctor.
Some services they can provide include:
- Emergency contraception
- Needle exchange
- Pregnancy testing
- Oxygen
Late night pharmacies
Late Night Chemist provides a list of late night pharmacies with their
opening times and contact details. The website is not run by the UK government
or the NHS.
