The postal code system in the UK can pinpoint a location precisely and is therefore used for accurate information about location.

The system is made up of a series of 5, 6 or 7 letters and numbers:

• A1 1AA
• A11 1AA
• AA1 1AA
• AA11 1AA
• A1A 1AA
• AA1A 1AA

Postcodes/Zip Codes in London and the UK

The first letter or two letters indicate the general location. In London postcodes use the points of a compass making it is easy to know approximately where a building is:

• E: East
• EC: East Central
• N: North
• NW: Northwest
• SE: Southeast
• SW: Southwest
• W: West
• WC: West Central

Two 'compass' postcodes which are not in London are NE (Newcastle) and S (Sheffield).

Differences occur in SE postal districts because the S areas were include in SE when they were merged.
